Right Action for Average Inherited Risk
One in eight women will get breast cancer. If your inherited risk is average or low, it doesn't mean you'll never get it. It just means that if you get it, it probably didn't come from your family.
Risk-Reducing Actions
There are some steps you can take to lower your overall risk for getting breast cancer. Lifestyle changes you can make that have been shown to lower the risk and can make you healthier overall. Like,
- Regular exercise
- A healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables
- Limiting your alcohol intake
- Breast-feeding your kids
Screening
Screeningis also incredibly important. If you haven't already, you should learn more about:
- Self breast exams.
- Yearly mammograms starting at around age 40.
- Clinical breast exams at least every 3 years if you're over 20, and every year if you're 40 or older.
