Emotional Support
Knowing that you're in a potentially high-risk group for breast cancer can make you anxious, afraid, angry and depressed. These are normal emotions when you learns something like this.
That's why it's so important to take the Right Actions. When you do you'll feel empowered to make the right choices to lower your risk as much as possible.
Here are some things you can do:
- Reach out to support organizations. These groups offer in-person and online support groups, chat groups, hotlines, and many other services to people affected by, or at high risk for, breast cancer.
- Take steps to manage anxiety and increase your overall well being. These may include yoga, meditation, acupuncture, listening to music, hanging out with friends, any type of exercise, or any activity you find relaxing and fun. Talking to a professional counselor or therapist can also be a big help.
- Find ways to talk to your family about your breast cancer risk - and theirs. This can be one of the most stressful aspects of going through genetic counseling and testing, because your family may not be on board with the process. Don't give up!
